Job Description & Details
This is a heavy-hitting architecture role where you'll be driving the enterprise-wide shift away from legacy SQL Server environments straight into modern Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL topologies. If you enjoy untangling complex schemas, rewriting gnarly stored procedures, and establishing the foundational data guardrails for an entire engineering organization, this one is worth a serious look.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
You'll spend your days defining the enterprise data strategy, building robust target-state roadmaps, and mapping out conceptual, logical, and physical data models using tools like ER/Studio. A massive chunk of your time will go toward leading the SQL Server discovery, assessing legacy assets, and architecting repeatable migration patterns that account for change data capture, cutovers, rollbacks, and zero-downtime production readiness. You'll also partner directly with application teams to sort out indexing, query optimization, connection management, and workload isolation.
The Core Tech Stack
You need absolute mastery over Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server, down to their underlying internals, execution plans, locking mechanics, and storage engines. Deep hands-on experience with AWS DMS (Database Migration Service) and schema conversion tools is non-negotiable. Familiarity with Terraform for infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipelines, and modern lakehouse patterns like Databricks or S3 will give you a massive edge in getting things automated and secure.
Interview Expectations
Expect the hiring managers to test your battle scars by asking how you handle a massive stored procedure migration from T-SQL to PL/pgSQL where the performance completely tanks on the target engine. They want to hear about your systematic approach to dissecting execution plans, re-indexing, and refactoring transactional logic. You'll also likely be grilled on how you architect change data capture (CDC) and reconciliation pipelines for zero-loss cutovers during high-stakes enterprise migrations.
Application Advice
Skip the generic project summaries and put your migration metrics right at the top of your resume. Highlight exact enterprise environments you've migrated, the terabyte scales you've managed, and your specific experience with AWS database migration tools and ER/Studio. Ensure keywords like 'Aurora PostgreSQL', 'SQL Server internals', 'Data Modeling', and 'Change Data Capture' are explicitly woven into your professional experience to easily clear their ATS filters.
