Automation and Controls Engineer

Job Description & Details

This is a hands-on automation role where you will spend a good chunk of your time deep in TIA Portal, configuring Siemens hardware and bringing complex industrial machines to life. If you actually enjoy getting your hands dirty with hardware diagnostics, wiring schematics, and drive commissioning rather than just pushing papers, this gig keeps you close to the metal.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

Expect to spend your days writing, debugging, and optimizing PLC code while troubleshooting stubborn communication faults on the factory floor. You will interface directly with Siemens S7 platforms, configure WinCC HMI screens for operators, and commission VFDs and servo systems. A typical week involves jumping between reading electrical schematics to trace down a failed sensor, tweaking PROFINET networks, and ensuring machine safety standards are met before handing the equipment over to production.

The Core Tech Stack

Your bread and butter here will be Siemens TIA Portal paired with S7-1200 and S7-1500 hardware. You cannot fake your way through this without deep, practical knowledge of Siemens SINAMICS drives and WinCC HMI development. The team relies heavily on your understanding of PROFINET, industrial control panels, and the ability to read electrical schematics under pressure to minimize costly machine downtime.

Interview Expectations

When you sit down with the engineering lead, expect them to ask you how you would diagnose a communication fault on a PROFINET network where a remote I/O drop keeps randomly dropping out. They want to hear a methodical approach, starting from physical layer checks up to diagnostic buffer analysis in TIA Portal. They will also likely drill you on drive commissioning—specifically, how you handle parameterization and fault diagnostics on a SINAMICS VFD when the motor is tripping on overcurrent during acceleration. They are secretly testing whether you panic and swap parts or actually troubleshoot using logic and data.

Application Advice

To get past the ATS and grab the hiring manager's attention, make sure your resume explicitly highlights the exact Siemens ecosystem keywords found in this description, such as 'TIA Portal', 'PROFINET', 'WinCC', and specific PLC families like 'S7-1500'. Don't just list them as bullet points; tie them to real projects where you reduced downtime or successfully commissioned a control panel from scratch. Frame your experience around practical troubleshooting and hardware integration to show you are ready to hit the ground running.
