Job Description & Details
This is a heavy-hitting GIS role where you will be bridging the gap between advanced spatial analysis and enterprise asset management. You won't just be making maps; you'll be building custom applications and maintaining critical infrastructure data systems under the guidance of the HMMS Program Manager. If you like working independently on complex spatial problems without someone micromanaging your workflow, this long-term gig is worth a serious look.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your day-to-day will involve diving deep into enterprise asset data management, running complex spatial analyses, and building out internal tools. You'll spend a lot of time writing custom web apps using the ArcGIS API for JavaScript, managing ArcGIS Enterprise infrastructure, and acting as the technical translator between IT, system admins, and non-technical stakeholders. Expect to handle data validation, maintain linear referencing systems like ESRI Roads & Highways, and troubleshoot issues across the entire ESRI suite.
The Core Tech Stack
You need absolute fluency in the ESRI ecosystem—specifically ArcGIS Pro 3.x, ArcGIS Enterprise, Portal, and ArcSDE. On the development side, a strong grip on JavaScript mapping APIs and Python for scripting and automation is non-negotiable. If you also bring experience with Oracle SQL, PostgreSQL, and reporting tools like Power BI, you will immediately stand out because they heavily rely on data extraction and analytics outside of just raw mapping.
Interview Expectations
The hiring manager is going to test your architectural knowledge of ArcGIS Enterprise and your practical coding ability. They'll likely ask you to explain how you would troubleshoot a performance bottleneck in a web app utilizing the ArcGIS API for JavaScript connected to a heavy enterprise geodatabase. They are secretly testing whether you actually understand the underlying data architecture (like ArcSDE and data stores) or if you just know how to click buttons in a UI. Be prepared to talk through a time you had to explain a dense technical GIS concept to a completely non-technical stakeholder.
Application Advice
Make sure your resume doesn't just list software names; highlight specific projects where you built web applications from scratch using JavaScript and Python. Explicitly feature keywords like 'ArcGIS Enterprise', 'ArcSDE', 'Linear Referencing Systems', and 'ArcGIS API for JavaScript' so you easily clear the ATS filters. If you have experience with enterprise asset management systems or Oracle SQL, put those right near the top as they are massive pluses for this specific team.
