Job Description & Details
This is a hands-on data center role where you'll be knee-deep in hardware repairs, server deployments, and Linux troubleshooting in Memphis. If you enjoy physical server builds, rack-and-stack work, and untangling messy operational tickets rather than just staring at an IDE all day, this 12-month contract will keep you very busy.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your day-to-day will involve a mix of hardware break-fix work and operational tracking. You'll be cracking open servers to replace faulty components, installing OSes, configuring Nvidia GPUs, and managing parts inventory. Because it's an onsite support gig, you'll also coordinate vendor escalations, escort field engineers, and handle random fire drills like sudden hardware failures or cooling coordination with the colocation team. Flexibility is mandatory here since you'll occasionally need to cover weekends, holidays, and after-hours support when things break.
The Core Tech Stack
To survive this role, you need to be deeply comfortable with Linux CLI and reading system logs to triage issues. Strong basic networking skills are non-negotiable since you'll be verifying connectivity and dealing with network troubleshooting. Hardware-wise, expect to get your hands dirty with server components, and if you have prior Dell Field Service Engineer (FSE) experience, plus familiarity with RoCE networks or Nvidia GPUs/NICs, you'll easily stand out from the crowd.
Interview Expectations
The hiring manager is going to test your practical troubleshooting instincts under pressure. Expect a scenario where a server fails a health check or a GPU is throwing errors in the Linux logs, and they'll want you to walk through your exact diagnostic steps from CLI to log extraction. They are secretly looking for methodical problem solvers who don't panic when hardware fails and who know how to safely handle enterprise-grade gear without breaking things.
Application Advice
Skip the generic resume layout and put your hardware and Linux chops right at the top. Make sure to explicitly include keywords like 'Linux CLI', 'Log Analysis', 'Hardware Break/Fix', and 'Dell FSE' so you easily clear the initial ATS filters. Highlight any past experience where you lifted heavy gear, worked in a live data center environment, and managed customer-facing service tickets, as proving your physical and operational readiness is half the battle here.
