Job Description & Details
This is a specialized contract role within the Department of Health and Human Services, focusing heavily on building out cloud-based analytics environments for critical Child Welfare and Medicaid programs. You will be knee-deep in modernizing data pipelines, integrating complex Salesforce sources, and ensuring that healthcare data is flowing reliably into Power BI dashboards where it actually impacts program outcomes. It is a government-adjacent tech gig that requires a solid grasp of both heavy-duty data engineering and bureaucratic data governance.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your day-to-day will revolve around architecting and maintaining scalable ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure Synapse and Data Factory while wrestling with Salesforce and Curam/Oracle API integrations. You'll spend a lot of time writing advanced SQL, optimizing slow-running queries, and configuring data models that feed Power BI semantic layers. Expect to spend troubleshooting cycles chasing down pipeline failures, API rate limits, and dataset refresh bottlenecks in a heavily scrutinized public sector ecosystem.
The Core Tech Stack
You need to bring absolute mastery in Azure cloud services, specifically Azure Synapse, Data Factory, and Azure Data Lake Storage. On top of that, you'll need at least five years of deep Power BI experience handling datasets, dataflows, and DirectQuery models. Strong Python or Scala skills are mandatory for data processing, alongside advanced SQL tuning and PL/SQL procedures to keep the entire ingestion and transformation workflow humming smoothly.
Interview Expectations
Expect the hiring team to grill you on how you handle data drift and schema evolution when pulling from external CRM sources like Salesforce into an Azure data lake. They will likely ask you to whiteboard an incremental load strategy using Azure Synapse and Data Factory, specifically probing how you would optimize a pipeline that is timing out on a massive semi-structured JSON payload. They want to see practical, battle-tested troubleshooting methods rather than textbook answers.
Application Advice
To get past the automated screening filters, make sure your resume explicitly mirrors the exact keyword combinations found in the job description, such as 'Azure Synapse Analytics', 'Power BI semantic layers', and 'Salesforce API integrations'. Don't just list technologies; write out bullet points that quantify how many terabytes of data you’ve managed, how much you've improved query performance, and the scale of the ETL pipelines you have personally built and deployed.
