ArcGIS Analyst/Admin

NCDIT-T

Job Description & Details

This is a hands-on, heavy-lifting GIS administration and support role nested within the NCDIT-T team, requiring you to actually know your way around the Esri ecosystem rather than just making basic maps. You'll be managing a massive ArcGIS Online environment for over 4,500 users while aggressively tackling federally mandated ADA and WCAG compliance across all published assets. If you like a healthy mix of platform administration, spatial data wrangling, and direct user consultation without getting bogged down in corporate red tape, this 12-month gig in Raleigh is worth a close look.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

Expect to spend your days knee-deep in ArcGIS Online and Enterprise administration, making sure user groups, permissions, and server configurations don't implode. You'll work directly with non-GIS stakeholders to translate their messy business requirements into clean, functional web apps using Experience Builder, Survey123, and Field Maps. A massive chunk of your workload this year will also be auditing existing web maps and apps for accessibility, ensuring everything we push out meets strict WCAG standards so that users with disabilities can actually navigate our spatial data without frustration.

The Core Tech Stack

You need absolute fluency in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online administration, and ArcGIS Enterprise server management. This isn't an entry-level click-and-wait job; you'll be expected to spin up hosted and referenced services across federated servers, write Arcade and Python scripts to automate workflows, and troubleshoot complex web mapping issues independently. Knowing how to build robust, user-friendly apps in Experience Builder while keeping security policies and metadata standards tight is non-negotiable.

Interview Expectations

When you talk to the technical panel, expect them to ask you how you would systematically audit a sprawling ArcGIS Online organization with thousands of users and hundreds of non-compliant web maps to bring them up to WCAG accessibility standards. They are secretly testing your organizational strategy and whether you understand the technical nuances of contrast ratios, screen reader compatibility, and alternative text in Esri apps. They will also likely quiz you on a tricky Enterprise administration scenario involving federated vs. unfederated servers and service publishing bottlenecks, so make sure you have real-world deployment stories ready to share.

Application Advice

Your resume needs to scream Esri platform administration and data governance, not just basic cartography. Make sure keywords like 'ArcGIS Enterprise Administration', 'Experience Builder', 'WCAG', 'Python', and 'ArcGIS Online' are front and center, backed by metrics showing the size of the user bases or server deployments you've managed in the past. Keep in mind that this role requires you to be local to the Triangle region of North Carolina and ready to go on-site on day one to grab your equipment, so explicitly state your local presence at the top of your resume to avoid getting auto-rejected by local-only filters.
