Job Description & Details
This is a heavy-duty backend migration gig where you will spend half your time untangling legacy SDWIS code and the other half building out the new DW-SFITES platform. If you enjoy building clean Java microservices, optimizing Oracle databases, and keeping critical public health infrastructure running, this role gives you plenty of real-world impact without the usual startup chaos.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your days will be split between routine operational firefighting and long-term architectural migration work. You will be troubleshooting live defects in the SDWIS application while simultaneously rewriting and porting modules over to DW-SFITES. Expect to spend significant time writing complex Oracle queries, optimizing database performance, and integrating APIs to ensure legacy and modern systems talk to each other without dropping packets.
The Core Tech Stack
To survive here, you need rock-solid, production-grade Java and deep Oracle database expertise. The hiring team isn't just looking for someone who can write basic CRUD apps; you need to know how to tune performance, handle data conversions during large-scale migrations, and build resilient API integrations. Experience with AI-assisted tools like GitHub Copilot is a nice bonus that will help you crank through the heavy migration workload faster.
Interview Expectations
Be ready for the interviewers to drop a gnarly SQL performance bottleneck on your lap and ask you how you would index and rewrite the query to cut execution time in half. They are secretly testing whether you can debug under pressure without breaking production. You should also expect a deep dive into your past migration projects—be prepared to explain how you handled data integrity risks and edge-case failures during system cutovers.
Application Advice
Skip the generic corporate summary and immediately highlight your hands-on experience with enterprise Java, Oracle database optimization, and legacy migrations right at the top of your resume. Make sure to weave in exact keywords from the listing—like API integration, defect resolution, and performance tuning—so you easily clear the initial ATS filters, and use your bullet points to emphasize actual performance gains you've delivered in past roles.
