Job Description & Details
This is a boots-on-the-ground Systems Analyst III contract role focused entirely on cleaning up and maintaining the hardware inventory for Milwaukee County. If you hate sitting behind a desk all day and prefer a mix of physical field audits, data reconciliation, and ITAM governance, this is a solid gig where your work will directly fix systemic CMDB drift.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your day-to-day will be split between walking County facilities to physically verify, tag, and audit IT hardware—from standard laptops and printers to specialized POS terminals—and fixing the discrepancies inside ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus and the CMDB. You'll be tracking down ghost assets, validating serial numbers against active network discovery tools, managing hardware lifecycles from intake to secure disposal, and coordinating with different departments to make sure every piece of tech is accounted for and financially coded.
The Core Tech Stack
You need deep, hands-on expertise in IT Asset Management (ITAM) frameworks and CMDB administration, specifically within platforms like ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus. The critical skills here revolve around hardware discovery reconciliation, tracking asset relationships (users, networks, tickets), enforcing compliance standards, and managing the end-to-end device lifecycle. Knowing how to spot systemic flaws in automated discovery workflows and writing up clean process documentation is what will separate a good contractor from a great one here.
Interview Expectations
Expect the hiring manager to ask you to walk through a time you discovered massive inventory drift between physical assets and the CMDB, probing specifically into how you traced the root cause and implemented automated or process fixes to prevent it from happening again. They will also likely test your knowledge of ITIL-aligned hardware lifecycles and chain-of-custody protocols for secure asset disposal, looking for someone who treats physical hardware security with the same rigor as software security.
Application Advice
When updating your resume for this role, make sure keywords like "IT Asset Management", "CMDB data accuracy", "Hardware Discovery", and "ServiceDesk Plus" are front and center. Don't just list them as bullet points; weave them into your experience sections by highlighting specific projects where you led physical inventory audits, reconciled mismatched endpoint data, or built out hardware governance workflows from scratch.
