GIS Specialist - Mid-Level

Not Disclosed

Job Description & Details

This is a solid mid-level GIS operations role centered around managing enterprise ArcGIS environments and building internal web applications for local stakeholders. If you enjoy wrangling spatial data, administering ArcGIS Online and Enterprise, and actually talking to users to solve their mapping bottlenecks, this position hits the sweet spot.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

Your day-to-day will be a mix of platform administration and hands-on spatial problem solving. You'll be setting up users and groups, publishing hosted services out of ArcGIS Pro, and spinning up responsive web apps using Experience Builder alongside field tools like Survey123 and Field Maps. You'll also field support tickets from both power users and folks who barely know what a shapefile is, meaning you need patience and solid communication skills to bridge that technical gap.

The Core Tech Stack

You need deep fluency with the Esri ecosystem, specifically ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online administration, paired with ArcGIS Pro for heavy spatial analysis and data management. Automation and data wrangling via Python and SQL are mandatory here since you'll be dealing with messy datasets and recurring data pipelines. Don't gloss over the WCAG accessibility requirement either—building compliant web GIS applications is a major focus for this team.

Interview Expectations

Expect the hiring team to grill you on real-world troubleshooting scenarios, likely asking how you would diagnose a broken feature service or handle a bottlenecked ArcGIS Enterprise federation issue. They want to see that you can troubleshoot methodically under pressure without breaking production environments. They'll also probe your Python scripting experience, so be ready to talk through a specific script you wrote to automate data processing or bulk updates in a geodatabase.

Application Advice

To get past the ATS filter, make sure your resume explicitly calls out your experience administering ArcGIS Enterprise/Online and building custom interfaces in Experience Builder. Don't just list 'GIS' as a skill; break down the specific tools you've used like Survey123, Field Maps, and Python/SQL for data management. Since this role strictly requires someone local to the Triangle region in North Carolina, put your current city and state right at the top of your resume so they don't auto-reject you thinking you're out of state.
