Employee Relations Consultant - Human Resources

Systems Engineering Services

Job Description & Details

If you know your way around employment law and aren't afraid to have tough conversations with leadership, this Employee Relations Consultant role gives you the autonomy to manage complex workplace investigations and mitigate organizational risk. It is a classic high-stakes HR advisory position where your ability to balance employee advocacy with business needs will dictate your success.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

You will spend a significant portion of your time acting as a trusted advisor to leaders across the organization, helping them navigate thorny performance issues, corrective actions, and involuntary terminations. When complaints come in regarding harassment, discrimination, or policy violations, you will be expected to step in, run thorough and objective workplace investigations, and document everything meticulously. It's not all putting out fires, though—you'll also be analyzing data trends to help leadership spot systemic risks before they blow up.

The Core Tech Stack

While there isn't a traditional coding stack here, your toolkit consists of deep fluency in federal, state, and local employment laws, standard HR case-management systems, and advanced Microsoft Office applications. You'll need to demonstrate a rock-solid understanding of documentation best practices for investigations, alongside professional HR certifications like SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR if you want to stand out from the pack.

Interview Expectations

The hiring team is going to test your judgment under pressure, likely asking you to walk through a scenario where a high-performing leader is pushing back against a necessary corrective action for an underperforming direct report. They want to see that you can remain objective, coach the leader effectively, and safeguard the company legally without alienating the business unit. They'll also probe your experience with handling multi-state employment regulations and how you structure a bias-free workplace investigation from intake to final report.

Application Advice

Make sure your resume leans heavily into your hands-on investigation experience and your track record of advising managers on sticky employee relations issues. Sprinkle in keywords straight from the listing like "workplace investigations," "employment-related compliance," "corrective action," and specific HR metrics if you have them, so your profile sails through the ATS and lands right on the recruitment team's desk.
