Job Description & Details
This is a hands-on Power BI Developer contract within the banking and financial sector, focusing heavily on embedding analytics into enterprise applications. If you enjoy moving past basic drag-and-drop reporting to architect secure, scalable dashboards backed by modern cloud data stacks, this role gives you plenty of technical depth to sink your teeth into.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your primary focus will be designing, developing, and deploying complex Power BI reports and dashboards, but with a heavy emphasis on integration. You'll spend a lot of time writing optimized DAX, shaping data with Power Query, and leveraging Power BI REST APIs and SDKs to embed these reports seamlessly into web and enterprise applications. Because this is banking, security is paramount—you will constantly be managing workspaces, datasets, and fine-tuning row-level security (RLS) to ensure strict data governance. Beyond pure reporting, you'll collaborate closely with backend systems, occasionally touching Node.js or JavaScript, and interfacing with Azure Databricks data pipelines.
The Core Tech Stack
To survive and thrive here, you need absolute mastery of Power BI, DAX, and advanced data modeling techniques. This isn't just about making things look pretty; it's about performance tuning massive datasets. You also need solid experience with Azure Databricks as your backend data source, alongside Power Query for ETL work. Experience embedding reports via SDKs and REST APIs is a strict requirement, not a nice-to-have. Familiarity with Node.js, Docker, Kubernetes, and GitHub Actions will help you fit right into their cloud-native, microservices-oriented deployment pipeline.
Interview Expectations
Expect the hiring team to grill you on how you optimize sluggish DAX queries in massive enterprise datasets, so be ready to walk them through a specific time you refactored a broken model to drastically improve report load times. They are secretly testing whether you understand memory management in Power BI and whether you know how to avoid common pitfalls like bi-directional filtering anti-patterns. You will also likely face a scenario-based question regarding embedding reports securely into a web app using SDKs, where they want to see how you handle token generation, user context passing, and Row-Level Security enforcement at scale.
Application Advice
Make sure your resume doesn't just list Power BI as a tool you've used, but explicitly highlights your architecture and embedding experience. Pull keywords directly from the job description like 'Row-Level Security (RLS)', 'Power BI REST APIs', 'SDKs', and 'Azure Databricks' into your professional summary and project bullets to ensure you clear the ATS. If you have any exposure to AI-assisted coding tools or containerized deployments, make sure those are front and center, as this team values modern developer tooling and is eager to experiment with LLMs and Model Context Protocol.
