ITX Developer (IBM Sterling Transformation Extender)

Job Description & Details

This 6-month contract role places you right in the middle of heavy enterprise data plumbing, building and maintaining data transformation maps using IBM Sterling Transformation Extender. If you enjoy untangling messy EDI transactions and making disparate systems talk to each other without dropping packets, this gig will keep you thoroughly engaged.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

You will spend a good chunk of your days designing, writing, and debugging ITX maps for both inbound and outbound EDI processing. You won't just be working in a silo; you will tie ITX directly into IBM Sterling File Gateway, B2B Integrator, ACE, and MQ to ensure seamless end-to-end data flows. Expect to deal with everything from X12 and EDIFACT to fixed-length flat files and XML, while also troubleshooting production fires when a trading partner suddenly changes their payload structure.

The Core Tech Stack

You absolutely must know your way around IBM ITX with at least three solid years of hands-on mapping experience. Beyond ITX, the ecosystem requires familiarity with B2BI, SFG, and IBM MQ for message queuing. Since you will be parsing legacy and modern data formats alike, strong SQL skills and a deep understanding of EDI standards like X12 and EDIFACT are non-negotiable.

Interview Expectations

Be ready for the hiring manager to hand you a scenario where a complex nested EDI transaction is failing validation and ask you to walk through your debugging process in ITX Type Designer and Design Studio. They are looking to see if you can methodically isolate input card issues, handle functional acknowledgments, and optimize map performance rather than just guessing. They might also quiz you on how you handle database lookups mid-transformation inside an ITX map without bringing down your throughput.

Application Advice

Skip the generic summaries and put IBM ITX, SFG, B2BI, and specific EDI standards right at the top of your resume. Mention the exact data formats you have worked with—such as CSV, XML, and X12—so the recruiter's keyword scanner instantly flags you as a match. Highlight any production support experience where you led root cause analysis on failed data loads, as proving you can keep mission-critical integration pipelines running smoothly is the ultimate selling point for this role.
