Job Description & Details
This is a heavy-duty backend and integration role sitting at the intersection of modern Java microservices and legacy insurance platforms. You won't just be writing clean code; you'll be firefighting production incidents and wiring up portals to core Guidewire suites like PolicyCenter and ClaimCenter. If you enjoy untangling complex API calls and handling high-stakes P&C insurance workflows, this gig will keep you busy.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your typical week will be split between building out robust APIs, troubleshooting gnarly integration failures between digital portals and backend systems, and providing L2/L3 production support. You'll spend a lot of time reviewing logs, performing root-cause analysis on failed transactions, and collaborating with UI and infrastructure teams in an Agile environment. When things break in production—whether it's an OAuth token expiration or a stalled BizTalk pipeline—you'll be the one expected to diagnose and fix it quickly.
The Core Tech Stack
Java and Spring Boot form the bedrock of this role, so you need to be extremely comfortable building RESTful microservices and managing dependencies with Maven. Beyond standard backend dev, you live and breathe integration: API gateways like Azure APIM, JSON/XML payloads, and security protocols like OAuth 2.0, JWT, and SAML are absolute non-negotiables. Familiarity with Guidewire Digital portals (CustomerEngage or ProducerEngage) and cloud platforms like Azure or AWS will make or break your ability to ramp up on this stack.
Interview Expectations
Expect the engineering panel to drill down into your API troubleshooting methodology by asking you to walk through a scenario where a REST call fails intermittently between a portal and Guidewire PolicyCenter. They want to see how you isolate the bottleneck across the middleware, gateway, and backend. You should also be ready to explain how you handle secure token propagation and authentication using OAuth 2.0 and JWT in a distributed microservices environment without sacrificing system performance.
Application Advice
To get past the recruiter screen, ensure your resume heavily emphasizes your hands-on Java/Spring Boot microservices background alongside specific mentions of Guidewire integration, API gateways, and production support metrics. Don't just list tools like Jenkins, GitHub, and Azure APIM; describe how you used them in CI/CD pipelines and incident resolution workflows. Weave in P&C insurance domain keywords if you have them, as that will instantly move your profile to the top of the pile.
