What You'll Actually Be Doing
You'll spend your days balancing high-level test strategy with deep technical execution. On any given morning, you might be leading defect triage and mentoring offshore QA engineers, while your afternoon involves writing robust UI and API automation scripts, integrating them into CI/CD pipelines, and pushing the team closer to true shift-left testing. You will constantly coordinate with developers and product owners to ensure quality gates aren't just bottlenecks, but accelerators for delivery.
The Core Tech Stack
Playwright paired with JavaScript or TypeScript is the absolute anchor of this role, so you need to be comfortable spinning up resilient UI automation suites from scratch. Beyond that, your daily toolkit will include Postman for API validation, CI/CD runners like Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins to keep pipelines green, and SQL for backend database verification. They need someone who doesn't just run scripts, but deeply understands how these tools fit into a modern DevOps lifecycle.
Interview Expectations
Expect the hiring manager to hand you a scenario where flaky UI tests are breaking the CI/CD pipeline right before a major release, and they'll want to hear how you isolate, debug, and fix the root cause without slowing down deployment velocity.
