Job Description & Details
This is a hands-on workflow engineering role focused on building and maintaining business process models using the Flowable engine. It is a great fit for early-career developers looking to specialize in BPM technologies and enterprise automation.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
You will spend your days designing and modeling business processes using BPMN 2.0 notation, setting up workflow definitions, and building forms and decision tables. A big part of the job involves writing Java service tasks, implementing listeners, and integrating REST APIs with the Flowable engine. Expect to work closely with business analysts to turn abstract requirements into concrete process diagrams while troubleshooting execution issues as they pop up.
The Core Tech Stack
You need solid working knowledge of Flowable or equivalent BPM engines like Camunda or Activiti, paired with a firm grasp of Java and Spring Boot. Because you will be tying workflows into external systems, understanding REST APIs, JSON, and basic SQL is non-negotiable. Git version control experience is also required to keep track of your process definitions and application code.
Interview Expectations
Expect the hiring manager to ask you to explain how you handle exception handling and error propagation inside a BPMN service task. They want to see if you understand transactional boundaries in workflow engines or if you write brittle code that breaks the process instance on failure. You will likely also be tested on your ability to map out a real-world business scenario using gateways and events in BPMN 2.0, so make sure your modeling fundamentals are sharp.
Application Advice
To get past the ATS, make sure your resume explicitly mentions terms like BPMN 2.0, Flowable, Java, Spring Boot, and REST API integration. Instead of just listing these technologies, highlight any academic projects or early-career work where you designed automated workflows, managed state transitions, or integrated backend services with a process engine.
