Job Description & Details
This is a solid, hands-on payroll tax role where you'll be deep in the weeds of multi-state compliance, W-2Cs, and agency notices. If you like untangling messy tax discrepancies and keeping large corporate entities out of regulatory trouble, this hybrid gig in Irving gives you plenty of complex problems to solve without being stuck at a desk five days a week.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your day-to-day will revolve around keeping multiple US legal entities compliant with federal, state, and local tax laws. You'll spend a good chunk of your time balancing quarterly filings, hunting down tax agency discrepancies to pull back refunds, and generating W-2Cs for multi-state employees, address updates, and wage adjustments. When pesky tax notices roll in from various state and federal agencies, you'll be the one researching the root cause and responding. You'll also handle Visa tax requirements, sort out state reciprocal agreements, and occasionally roll up your sleeves to support M&A integrations with new tax account setups and Power of Attorney forms.
The Core Tech Stack
You'll need a rock-solid foundation in US payroll tax compliance, particularly in a large multi-state environment where tax rules change at every state border. Experience with Workday is a massive plus here since a lot of your wage and tax adjustments will live in that system, along with familiarity with ADP SmartCompliance for handling agency notices. Because you're constantly digging into error reports, negative wage issues, and historical adjustments, your Excel skills need to be sharp enough to handle heavy data manipulation without breaking a sweat.
Interview Expectations
Expect the hiring manager to hand you a scenario where a multi-state employee was taxed in the wrong state for two quarters, and they'll want to hear your step-by-step approach to fixing the liability, issuing the adjustment, and handling the eventual W-2C. They are secretly testing your methodical patience and attention to detail, so walk them through your audit trail from the initial error report to agency communication. Another likely question will test how you handle competing deadlines during quarterly balancing crunch time, where they want to see that you can prioritize urgent tax notices while keeping your cool.
Application Advice
To get past the ATS, make sure your resume explicitly highlights your hands-on experience with multi-state payroll tax compliance, quarterly balancing, and W-2C processing. Don't just list tools like Workday or Excel as passive skills; weave them into your bullet points by describing how you used them to resolve complex tax discrepancies or run error reports. Emphasize your background in dealing with taxing agencies and agency notices so they immediately recognize you as someone who can step into this role with minimal hand-holding.
