Job Description & Details
This is a solid, mid-level GIS contract with the North Carolina Department of Transportation where you won't just be churning out maps—you'll be actively managing the ArcGIS platform and spearheading a crucial federally mandated ADA compliance push. If you enjoy a mix of platform administration, user support, and modern web app building without being chained to a desk, this 12-month gig offers a great opportunity to shape geospatial workflows for thousands of internal users.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
You'll spend your days acting as the primary glue between the NCDIT-T GIS team and everyday users, helping them spin up new projects, dashboards, and web experiences. A massive part of your workload this year will be auditing existing published items for ADA and WCAG compliance, meaning you'll be fixing accessibility issues, writing solid documentation, and ensuring that platforms like GO!NC stay locked down and secure. You'll also handle day-to-day user management for over 4,500 accounts while fielding custom requests from various business units.
The Core Tech Stack
You absolutely need to know your way around ArcGIS Enterprise Administration and ArcGIS Online, as managing 4,500+ users and publishing both hosted and referenced services across federated servers is a baseline requirement here. Experience with ArcGIS Pro, Experience Builder, Survey123, and Field Maps is non-negotiable since you'll be building out those exact workflows. Finally, keep your Python, SQL, and Arcade scripting sharp because you will rely on them to automate tasks and troubleshoot stubborn apps.
Interview Expectations
The hiring team is going to want proof that you can talk shop with both hardcore GIS nerds and non-technical stakeholders, so expect scenario-based questions about translating vague user requests into actual geospatial deliverables. They will likely ask you to walk through how you troubleshoot a broken web service or manage permissions in a complex ArcGIS Enterprise environment, looking for methodical problem-solving and a clear grasp of security policies.
Application Advice
To make it past the ATS, make sure your resume explicitly lists out keywords from the job description like ArcGIS Enterprise Administration, Experience Builder, Survey123, and Python/Arcade. Don't just list software names; weave them into bullet points that emphasize your experience with user management, publishing services, and specifically any background you have with accessibility standards or compliance audits.
