Job Description & Details
This is a hands-on, execution-heavy infrastructure role where you won't be bogged down by heavy architecture planning or redesigns. They need someone who can jump straight into day-to-day virtualization, backup management, and security triage without needing a handbook. If you like solving actual problems instead of just bouncing tickets back and forth to other teams, this gig is worth a serious look.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
You'll spend your days keeping the lights on across a heavily mixed environment, handling everything from routine VMware administration to troubleshooting stubborn Veeam backup failures. Since the environment is split right down the middle between Linux and Windows, you'll constantly pivot between patching SUSE and managing Azure resource groups. You'll also be the first line of defense for security alerts, chasing down CVEs, dealing with snapshot issues, and making sure vulnerabilities are actually remediated rather than just ignored.
The Core Tech Stack
Your absolute bread and butter here will be VMware and Veeam, with Veeam arguably holding the highest priority in their daily operations. You need to be completely comfortable navigating vCenter independently, understanding vMotion versus Storage vMotion, and fixing resource bottlenecks. On top of that, working knowledge of Azure basics like VNets and VM administration is non-negotiable, while SLES and tools like Tenable, Microsoft Defender, and Arctic Wolf round out the daily toolkit.
Interview Expectations
Expect the hiring manager to throw a real-world scenario at you, like explaining how you would methodically troubleshoot a Veeam backup job that keeps failing due to a hung snapshot. They aren't looking for textbook definitions; they want to see your actual thought process on how you isolate storage locks versus hypervisor constraints. You'll also likely be quizzed on how you handle vulnerability remediation when a critical CVE drops on a system that can't easily be taken offline, revealing how you balance risk prioritization with operational uptime.
Application Advice
To get past the ATS and grab the recruiter's attention, make sure your resume explicitly calls out hands-on vCenter administration, Veeam troubleshooting experience, and specific security tools like Tenable or Arctic Wolf. Don't hide your Linux or Azure skills under generic bullet points; explicitly state your comfort level with SLES patching and Azure resource groups so they immediately check the box on your baseline qualifications.
