Job Description & Details
This is a heavy-duty infrastructure gig focused on keeping mission-critical virtualization running smoothly without leaning on VMware. You will be knee-deep in Microsoft SCVMM, enterprise Hyper-V clusters, and HPE iron, meaning you need to know your way around bare-metal hardware just as well as the hypervisor. If you enjoy untangling complex networking issues and automating yourself out of repetitive administrative tasks with PowerShell, this role will keep you challenged.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your day-to-day will revolve around architecting, managing, and troubleshooting large-scale Windows Server and Hyper-V deployments. You'll spend plenty of time configuring Failover Clustering, dealing with Cluster Shared Volumes on SAN/NAS storage, and handling firmware lifecycle management for HPE ProLiant DL380 servers. When things break—whether it is a dropped VLAN, a stuck live migration, or a botched WSUS patching cycle—you are the final escalation point expected to diagnose the root cause quickly and keep downtime to an absolute minimum.
The Core Tech Stack
Microsoft SCVMM and Hyper-V are your bread and butter here, so you need a deep, production-level understanding of virtual switches, NIC teaming, and host groups. Windows Server 2016 through 2022+ expertise is mandatory, alongside rock-solid PowerShell skills for spinning up automation scripts and reporting tools. On the hardware and storage side, familiarity with HPE ProLiant DL380s, HPE OneView, and underlying SAN/NAS architectures is non-negotiable if you want to survive the infrastructure demands of this environment.
Interview Expectations
The hiring team is going to test your real-world troubleshooting instincts under pressure. Expect a scenario-based question about a Hyper-V Live Migration failure that throws a cryptic error, where they will want to hear how you systematically isolate network, storage, and cluster configuration variables to fix it. You will also likely be grilled on how you architect high availability and disaster recovery using Failover Clustering and CSVs, so be ready to explain your exact methodology for handling split-brain scenarios and storage latency bottlenecks.
Application Advice
Make sure your resume doesn't just list technologies, but clearly highlights the scale of the environments you have managed. Drop exact metrics like the number of Hyper-V hosts, VMs, and storage capacity you've overseen. To get past the ATS, explicitly include exact keyword matches from the job description such as SCVMM, Failover Clustering, HPE ProLiant DL380, WSUS, and PowerShell automation, while emphasizing your hands-on capacity planning and infrastructure troubleshooting background.
