Lead Java Developer

Job Description & Details

This is a heavy-duty backend engineering gig modernizing the New York State Integrated Eligibility System, where your code will literally impact how millions of residents access critical health and human services like Medicaid and SNAP. You'll be stepping into a complex, enterprise-level ecosystem where system stability and strict federal compliance are just as important as writing clean code.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

You'll spend your days designing, building, and scaling high-volume Java applications while acting as a technical lead for cross-functional teams. Expect to untangle legacy logic, build out robust microservices, troubleshoot gnarly production bugs like memory leaks, and collaborate closely with architects, business analysts, and testers in an Agile/Scrum environment.

The Core Tech Stack

You need absolute mastery over modern Java, particularly Java/J2EE, Spring Boot, Spring Security, and Hibernate/JPA. Beyond the language itself, the architecture relies heavily on containerization with Docker and Kubernetes running on major cloud platforms like AWS, paired with relational databases like Oracle or PostgreSQL. If you don't breathe SOLID principles and microservices design patterns, you'll struggle to keep up with the scale here.

Interview Expectations

Be ready for a deep dive into your experience with distributed transactions and eventual consistency models within microservices architectures, as the hiring managers want to know how you handle data integrity across decoupled systems. They'll also grill you on your leadership capabilities—expect situational questions about how you handle technical disagreements on a team or mentor junior developers under tight government project deadlines.

Application Advice

To make it past the ATS, your resume needs to explicitly feature heavy-hitting enterprise keywords like Spring Boot, Hibernate, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines alongside your years of experience. Don't just list technologies; weave in specific bullet points highlighting your leadership experience and any background you have working within complex state or federal government IT programs.
