Job Description & Details
This is a heavy-duty data role where you will be bridging the gap between raw data pipelines and executive-facing Tableau dashboards. If you like living in the weeds of complex database performance while also building slick visual reporting tools, this 12-month gig in Hartford is right up your alley. You won't just be pushing pixels; you'll be overhauling the underlying ETL logic that makes those reports actually load in under ten seconds.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your typical week will be split between writing gnarly T-SQL, tuning SSIS packages, and standing up Tableau dashboards that stakeholders can actually understand. You will spend a good chunk of time troubleshooting query performance issues, figuring out why a stored procedure is timing out, and migrating legacy data processes into a clean, modern ELT pipeline. Expect to work closely with data analysts and business owners who know what metrics they want, but rely on you to architect the backend to serve those numbers reliably.
The Core Tech Stack
You need deep, battle-tested experience with the Microsoft SQL Server ecosystem—specifically T-SQL, SSIS, and writing complex SQL queries from scratch. Tableau is non-negotiable, meaning you need to know how to build performant workbooks without crashing the server. Familiarity with Git for managing your SSIS deployments and Talend for broader ETL tasks will keep you from sinking on day one. If you can't optimize a poorly written join or explain execution plans, you are going to struggle here.
Interview Expectations
Be ready for the hiring manager to throw a messy SQL query execution plan at you and ask how you would rewrite it to improve performance. They want to see if you instinctively look for missing indexes, unnecessary cursors, or poorly structured subqueries. They will also likely drill you on SSIS deployment patterns, specifically asking how you handle environment variable configurations and error handling when deploying via Git. Don't just give textbook answers; walk them through a real production fire you put out in a past role.
Application Advice
To get past the ATS, your resume needs to explicitly feature keywords like Tableau development, complex SQL queries, T-SQL, SSIS packages, and performance optimization right at the top. Don't just list technologies; quantify your impact by mentioning how many data sources you integrated, the size of the databases you managed, or the percentage performance boost you achieved on slow-running reports. Show them you understand the full data lifecycle from raw ETL ingestion to polished visualization.
