Job Description & Details
This is a heavy-duty, cleared infrastructure role where you'll own the end-to-end Active Directory and Windows Server migration lifecycle for federal and commercial clients. If you enjoy untangling legacy directory messes, designing forest trusts, and executing zero-downtime cutovers without breaking enterprise applications, this gig is right in your wheelhouse.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
You'll spend your days buried deep in environment assessments, mapping out DNS dependencies, and figuring out how to consolidate domains without causing a P1 incident for end users. You'll write meticulous migration runbooks, herd cats across cross-functional security and app teams, and drive the actual cutovers using enterprise tools like Quest Migration Manager. Expect to deal with stubborn service accounts, Group Policy quirks, and post-migration validation headaches that require real troubleshooting grit.
The Core Tech Stack
You need absolute mastery over Windows Server and Active Directory—we're talking forests, trusts, LDAP, DHCP, DNS, and GPOs down to the metal. Hands-on experience with enterprise migration tools like Quest Migration Manager is non-negotiable here. On top of that, you'll need a solid working knowledge of virtualization platforms like VMware vSphere or Hyper-V, plus enough familiarity with hybrid identity (like Microsoft Entra ID) to handle modern enterprise demands.
Interview Expectations
Expect the hiring manager to throw a complex scenario at you involving a stalled forest trust and conflicting GPOs during a live cutover weekend, looking to see how you handle unexpected downtime under pressure. They'll also probe deep into your past migration runbooks to figure out if you truly understand object mapping,SID history management, and rollback procedures, or if you've just been a passenger on migration projects instead of the driver.
Application Advice
Your resume needs to make it past the federal ATS by explicitly highlighting your hard numbers—mention the size of the domains you've migrated, the number of objects you've moved, and the specific tools you used. Do not just list Active Directory as a bullet; write specific achievements detailing your experience with Quest Migration Manager, forest consolidations, and how you minimized business disruption during cutover weekends.
