Job Description & Details
This is a hands-on 6-month W2 contract role for a Senior MicroStrategy / Business Intelligence Engineer based near Reston, VA with a weekly hybrid onsite cadence. You will be building and optimizing high-performance reporting suites and enterprise dashboards, requiring deep technical fluency in both reporting architecture and underlying data pipelines. If you have spent years wrestling with complex SQL and MicroStrategy object design, this project offers a clear path to make an immediate impact on internal analytics systems.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Expect to spend your days collaborating directly with enterprise stakeholders to translate ambiguous reporting requirements into highly scalable dashboards, Visual Insight documents, and advanced analytics reports. You will own the end-to-end delivery lifecycle, from designing multi-pass SQL queries and optimizing VLDB properties to leading testing and coordinating cross-team deployments. A significant part of the role also involves diagnosing performance bottlenecks in historical data layers and mentoring teams on effective BI patterns.
The Core Tech Stack
Your bread and butter here will be the MicroStrategy platform suite—specifically Report Services Documents, Visual Insight Dashboards, and complex metrics like rolling and nested calculations. Beyond the reporting layer, you need rock-solid SQL skills for writing advanced stored procedures and tuning relational databases. Familiarity with Big Data environments like Hadoop, Spark, or Cassandra, alongside cloud platforms (AWS/Azure) and CI/CD pipelines, will be critical when integrating your BI solutions into modern data architectures.
Interview Expectations
When you talk to the hiring manager, expect them to test your depth on MicroStrategy schema design and performance tuning; be ready to explain how you handle recursive relationships and optimize VLDB properties for heavy multi-pass queries. They will also likely drill down into your experience with Big Data integration, asking how you ensure dashboard performance doesn't tank when querying massive distributed datasets. The goal here is to prove you can balance clean reporting design with heavy-duty database performance.
Application Advice
Make sure your resume doesn't just list generic BI duties, but explicitly highlights your hands-on experience with MicroStrategy architecture, complex SQL performance tuning, and dashboard optimization. Mirror the terminology from the job description by highlighting specific components like Visual Insight, relationship filters, and report services documents. If you have background experience working in healthcare analytics or modern CI/CD deployment pipelines, put those near the top to catch the recruiter's eye immediately.
