Job Description & Details
This is a gritty, boots-on-the-ground role for anyone who loves hardware and physical infrastructure. You'll be spending your shifts elbow-deep in enterprise racks, managing everything from complex fiber optics to massive server deployments in a high-density hyperscale environment.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Expect to spend your days running high-density cabling, terminating fibers, and dropping servers into racks while keeping airflow and cable hygiene meticulously clean. You'll also handle the daily break/fix grind—swapping dead transceivers, tracing down failed physical links, and closing out tickets while navigating 24x7 rotating shifts and on-call rotations.
The Core Tech Stack
You need absolute fluency with optical infrastructure and structured cabling. That means real-world experience with fiber optic fusion splicing, OTDR testing, and dealing with MPO/MTP connectors alongside standard Cat6A copper runs. If you haven't spent hours squinting at fiber end-faces through a scope and troubleshooting light levels, you're going to struggle here.
Interview Expectations
They will likely ask you to walk them through your exact process for troubleshooting a high-loss fiber link using an OTDR. The hiring manager is listening to see if you methodically isolate the problem—checking cleanliness, inspecting end-faces, and verifying launch cables—before jumping to conclusions. Another classic line of questioning will test your ability to handle unexpected hardware failures during a high-pressure server migration on a night shift.
Application Advice
Skip the generic IT support keywords and load your resume with specific physical layer terminology. Explicitly mention your hours logged doing fusion splicing, OTDR testing, and managing high-density OM4, OS2, and MPO/MTP cabling to get past the automated screeners.
