IT Support Technician / Systems Administrator

Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM)

Job Description & Details

This is a boots-on-the-ground IT support and infrastructure role where you'll be managing everything from Point of Sale (POS) terminals to local networks across Navy Exchange facilities. It's a hands-on position requiring physical presence and travel between sites, meaning you'll spend just as much time troubleshooting physical hardware and RF gear as you will configuring software systems.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

Your day-to-day will involve running network cables, swapping out malfunctioning desktop hardware, maintaining retail POS systems, and dealing with RF warehouse equipment like conveyor tech and scanners. You are the primary field escalation point for store and distribution center management, meaning when a register goes down or a network drops, you're the one diagnosing the root cause under pressure. You will also handle capacity planning, asset management documentation, and rigorous compliance with Department of Navy information assurance policies.

The Core Tech Stack

You need a solid foundation in Windows operating systems, Active Directory, LAN/WAN architecture, and RF wireless networking. Because this is a retail and logistics environment, deep familiarity with Point of Sale (POS) systems, database troubleshooting (SQL, Access), and peripheral hardware repair is non-negotiable. Furthermore, holding or quickly acquiring required compliance certifications like Security+, Network+, or CompTIA A+ is mandatory to meet strict Department of Navy cybersecurity standards.

Interview Expectations

Expect the hiring managers to test your structured troubleshooting methodology by throwing a real-world scenario at you, such as a localized network failure taking down half the checkout lanes in a busy retail exchange. They want to see how you isolate the problem from physical layer to application layer while keeping stakeholders updated. Another common area of questioning will revolve around your familiarity with security compliance and how you handle access controls, asset tracking, and audit readiness under strict government frameworks.

Application Advice

When updating your resume for this role, make sure to explicitly highlight your hands-on hardware repair, LAN/WAN troubleshooting, and POS support experience rather than just focusing on remote software administration. Mirror keywords directly from the job description such as 'asset management,' 'RF networking,' 'capacity planning,' and 'Information Assurance' to breeze through the automated ATS filters. Finally, clearly state the status of any active IT certifications like CompTIA Security+ or Network+ right at the top, as lacking these requires you to obtain them within your first six months.
