Build/Deploy Engineer

NCDHHS-NCFAST

Job Description & Details

This is a heavy-duty automation and infrastructure role supporting the NC FAST application within the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. You will be spending your days elbow-deep in Ansible playbooks, smoothing out deployment pipelines, and wrangling cloud infrastructure to make sure critical health and human services applications don't stumble during releases.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

Your primary mission is to eliminate manual toil from the build and deployment lifecycle. You'll work closely with architects, developers, and DBAs to automate infrastructure provisioning, patch Linux OS across environments, and handle database changes via automation scripts. Expect to write Python, Bash, and shell scripts to glue workflows together, manage containers with Docker and Kubernetes, and occasionally field after-hours pages since this role carries on-call responsibilities for evenings and weekends.

The Core Tech Stack

Ansible Tower/AWX, YAML, and Linux administration form the backbone of this position, so you need to be exceptionally comfortable automating OS patches and software deployments. On top of that, you must have solid chops in Terraform for infrastructure-as-code, Git or Bitbucket for source control, and container tooling like Docker and Kubernetes. AWS experience is a major bonus that will help you navigate their cloud environments smoothly.

Interview Expectations

When you sit down with the hiring team, be prepared to walk through a complex Ansible playbook failure and explain how you debugged it under pressure. They will likely grill you on your approach to managing state and configuration drift using Terraform and Ansible simultaneously. The hiring manager is secretly looking for someone who doesn't just write scripts, but understands enterprise release reliability, security best practices, and how to collaborate cross-functionally without breaking production.

Application Advice

To make it past the ATS, your resume needs to explicitly mirror the core requirements found in the job description. Make sure terms like 'Ansible Tower/AWX', 'Infrastructure-as-Code', 'CI/CD pipeline', and specific scripting languages like Python and Bash are front and center. Don't just list these tools; highlight specific metrics or projects where you successfully reduced deployment times or automated tedious manual tasks in a Linux environment.
