Job Description & Details
This role puts you right in the middle of a massive clinical systems modernization effort at Optum, handling the Core Clinical Orders sub-domain. If you know Epic inside and out and actually enjoy translating messy clinical requirements into clean system configurations, this gig gives you the ownership to make a real impact on how healthcare is delivered.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your day-to-day will be a mix of deep-dive workflow analysis, hands-on Epic building, and untangling complex integration issues. You'll spend plenty of time designing screens, tweaking order sets, and figuring out why a specific interface isn't playing nice with downstream systems. Beyond the technical build, you'll act as the bridge between clinical stakeholders and technical teams, running working sessions and making sure everyone is aligned from concept to final deployment.
The Core Tech Stack
You absolutely need active certification or proficiency in Epic Orders, Order Transmittal, Order Sets, and/or ICON. Optum is looking for someone with at least three years of solid, hands-on Epic technical build experience combined with a strong background as a Business Systems Analyst in the healthcare space. Knowing how to configure the system is half the battle; the other half is understanding clinical workflows well enough to design solutions that doctors and nurses won't hate using.
Interview Expectations
You will likely get grilled on your specific Epic build experience and how you handle conflicting priorities from clinical stakeholders. Expect a technical scenario where a critical order set update breaks an integration, and the hiring manager will want to hear your exact troubleshooting methodology from escalation to resolution. They are secretly testing whether you can think on your feet under pressure while keeping clinical users calm and informed.
Application Advice
Don't just list 'Epic' and 'BSA' as buzzwords on your resume; spell out the exact modules you own, the scale of the order sets you've built, and how your changes measurably improved clinical workflows. Make sure keywords like 'Order Transmittal', 'ICON', 'functional specifications', and 'system modernization' are prominent to easily clear the automated ATS filters and catch the eye of the technical recruiter.
