Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Community Outreach Specialist
Job Description & Details
This is a boots-on-the-ground public health outreach role focused on reducing infant mortality across northern Indiana via the state's Moms Helpline initiative. You'll spend a good amount of time traveling to events, building local agency partnerships, and serving as the primary bridge between families in need and critical state resources.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your days will rarely look the same. You might spend the morning updating stakeholder tracking spreadsheets in Excel, coordinate marketing materials with the public affairs office around lunch, and then drive out to an evening health fair or community expo to pitch the Moms Helpline to local families and healthcare providers. You'll be managing relationships with WIC offices, hospitals, Head Start programs, and NICUs, requiring a strong mix of administrative organization and frontline public speaking.
The Core Tech Stack
While this isn't a software engineering role, you live and die by Microsoft Office—specifically Word, PowerPoint for public presentations, and Excel for tracking community contacts and event inventories. You also need a deep working knowledge of Indiana Medicaid policies, behavioral healthcare landscapes, and local social services to accurately link families to the right help.
Interview Expectations
Expect the hiring team to ask you how you would handle walking into a hostile or skeptical community environment where engagement with state agencies is historically low. They want to see your emotional intelligence and ability to build trust on a human level. You'll also likely be quizzed on your public speaking abilities, with a prompt to explain a complex state health policy or program in simple terms that a stressed parent could easily understand.
Application Advice
Make sure your resume explicitly calls out any past community outreach, public health, or state agency experience right at the top. Don't hide your administrative chops—spell out your proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint clearly, as the ATS will be scanning for those exact software keywords alongside human services credentials.
