Job Description & Details
This is a specialized, high-stakes infrastructure role focused entirely on building out enterprise cryptographic foundations. If you don't know the difference between a key-wrapping operation in PKCS#11 and a standard cloud secrets manager, this isn't the gig for you. They need someone who can walk in, secure the hardware security modules, and make sure their PKI doesn't collapse under a compliance audit.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
You'll spend your days knee-deep in architectural diagrams, configuring high-availability HSM clusters, and figuring out how to safely migrate keys without breaking production apps. Expect to design bulletproof key lifecycle policies—from generation to the final secure destruction ceremony—while dealing with the quirks of multi-cloud cryptographic integrations. You'll also be the person the engineering team comes to when their mTLS handshake fails or an application can't talk to the cloud HSM.
The Core Tech Stack
You absolutely must know your way around Thales Luna, Entrust nShield, or major cloud HSMs like AWS CloudHSM and Azure Managed HSM. Beyond the hardware, your daily toolkit involves deep mastery of PKCS#11, JCE, and cryptographic primitives like AES, RSA, and ECC. FIPS 140-2/3 compliance and PCI DSS requirements aren't just nice-to-haves here; they are the baseline metric for whether your designs pass muster.
Interview Expectations
Expect them to grill you on disaster recovery scenarios, specifically asking how you would handle a split-brain situation in a multi-region HSM cluster without leaking master key material. They're also going to throw a real-world integration challenge at you, likely involving legacy app migration to a cloud HSM via PKCS#11, to see if you actually know how to debug weird API errors or if you just read about it in a textbook.
Application Advice
Don't just list every security buzzword you've ever heard; explicitly state which specific HSM vendors and models you have personally configured and managed. Make sure your resume highlights your experience with PKI architecture, FIPS compliance audits, and key lifecycle management protocols so you immediately clear the ATS filters for deep technical relevance.
