This is a heavy-hitting infrastructure and cloud migration role centered entirely around getting legacy workloads out of on-prem data centers and into Azure VMware Solution (AVS). If you enjoy untangling messy hybrid environments, wrangling enterprise identity, and being the final escalation point when things break, this gig is worth a serious look.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Your days will be split between high-level architectural planning and deep-in-the-trenches troubleshooting. You will own the AVS platform end-to-end, steering complex migration waves while making sure active migrations don't degrade day-to-day hybrid performance. Expect to spend a lot of time diagnosing quirky networking bugs between on-prem and Azure, fine-tuning Azure SQL and App Gateways, and sorting out hybrid identity headaches in Entra ID and Active Directory. You'll also be expected to lead incident responses from the front and mentor more junior folks who get stuck.
The Core Tech Stack
Azure VMware Solution (AVS) is non-negotiable here; you need to have scars from actually migrating enterprise VMware workloads into Azure, not just read documentation about it. Beyond AVS, you'll live and breathe Azure infrastructure (VMs, Blob, Azure SQL, Application Gateway) alongside rock-solid Active Directory and Entra ID hybrid configurations. PowerShell is your primary weapon for driving automation and FinOps cost optimization, so don't expect to survive here strictly using the Azure Portal GUI.
Interview Expectations
When you talk to the hiring team, expect them to test your mettle with a scenario where an AVS migration stalls mid-way due to a complex hybrid networking or stretched L2 domain issue; they want to hear how you systematically isolate the bottleneck without panicking. They will also likely drill you on advanced Entra ID and hybrid identity federation edge-cases, probing to see if you genuinely understand token lifecycles and conditional access troubleshooting or if you've just clicked through basic setup wizards.
