Job Description & Details
This is a solid, bread-and-butter SDET role where you won't just be clicking buttons manually all day; you'll be writing actual code to break things before the users do. If you like owning test frameworks and integrating them directly into deployment pipelines rather than just throwing bugs over the fence to developers, this gig is worth a serious look.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
You'll spend your days building, scaling, and maintaining test automation suites using Selenium and modern programming languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript. Expect to write automated scripts for functional and regression runs, untangle flaky tests, and plug your suites into CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins. You will also collaborate closely with devs and product folks during Agile sprints to ensure new features don't silently break existing functionality in production.
The Core Tech Stack
You need absolute fluency in Selenium WebDriver and at least one solid programming language such as Java, Python, or JavaScript. Familiarity with testing frameworks like TestNG, JUnit, or Cucumber is non-negotiable because that is how your test suites will be structured and executed. Beyond UI testing, you will also need to handle API validation using tools like Postman or REST Assured, plus a good grasp of Git for version control and Maven for managing builds.
Interview Expectations
Expect the hiring manager to throw a classic automation problem your way, such as how you handle dynamic web elements that constantly change their XPaths or IDs during a deployment. They aren't just looking for a hardcoded selector; they want to hear about your strategy for writing resilient, maintainable locators and implementing explicit waits to avoid flaky test failures. They might also grill you on your experience designing a test automation framework from scratch versus just maintaining an existing one.
Application Advice
Make sure your resume screams 'automation engineer' rather than 'manual tester who occasionally writes scripts'. Explicitly list out the frameworks you have built or maintained, highlighting keywords like Selenium WebDriver, TestNG, Cucumber, and CI/CD integration. If you have experience reducing test execution time or increasing test coverage metrics, put those numbers front and center to clear the initial recruiter filters.
