Lead Software Engineer - Email, DNS, SES, Java Development

Job Description & Details

This is a specialized lead role for someone who truly understands the deep plumbing of enterprise email infrastructure, not just standard API integrations. You'll be building and owning a high-volume messaging platform on AWS from the ground up, balancing deep technical execution with architectural leadership.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

Your day-to-day will span across multiple domains: you might spend the morning architecting an asynchronous event-driven queue in AWS, the afternoon debugging a tricky DMARC alignment or SPF record issue with infrastructure teams, and the rest of the day reviewing Spring Boot microservice code. You are the definitive Subject Matter Expert here, meaning you own sender reputation, bounce/complaint handling strategies, and domain authentication pipelines end-to-end. Expect to drive technical direction while remaining hands-on enough to write and review critical code.

The Core Tech Stack

You need absolute mastery over Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) and underlying AWS components like SNS, S3, and modern event-driven messaging patterns. On the application side, heavy expertise in Java and Spring Boot is non-negotiable for building the APIs and processing pipelines. More importantly, you must be a veteran in enterprise email deliverability—knowing the intricacies of DNS records (MX, TXT, CNAME), domain authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), and managing IP-warmup strategies to keep inbox placement rates high.

Interview Expectations

Expect the hiring team to drill deep into your real-world experience with mailbox provider filtering and reputation management. They will likely ask you to explain how you would troubleshoot a sudden spike in hard bounces or a drop in delivery rates for a specific mailbox provider while maintaining strict enterprise throughput. They want to see how you balance architectural decisions with hands-on debugging, so be ready to walk through a complex failure scenario you've personally resolved in past productions.

Application Advice

To get past the ATS, make sure your resume explicitly highlights your experience with high-volume transactional email pipelines, AWS SES configuration sets, and DNS authentication mechanisms rather than just generic Java development. Weave in metrics around email volume, deliverability rates, and scale to prove you've operated at an enterprise level. Emphasize your technical leadership and architecture ownership, as this is fundamentally a leadership role disguised as a developer position.
