Job Description & Details
Remote L3 Infrastructure Support Engineer role at UKG, focused on keeping VMware, NetApp/Pure storage, and Linux/Windows servers humming across several data centers. You’ll be the go‑to person when onsite teams need a hand, handling everything from patch cycles to deep‑dive troubleshooting.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
You’ll spend most of your day digging into alerts and tickets that span virtual machines, SAN arrays, and both Linux and Windows hosts. Expect to patch hundreds of servers each month, spin up compute and storage resources on demand, and troubleshoot anything that breaks – from a mis‑configured VM to a failing NetApp volume. You’ll also coordinate with on‑site infrastructure crews to hand off routine ops, and keep backup jobs running smoothly across multiple data‑center sites.
The Core Tech Stack
The non‑negotiables are solid VMware administration (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter) and hands‑on experience with NetApp or Pure Storage arrays. You also need to be comfortable on the command line for Linux (RHEL/CentOS) and know Windows Server internals for patching and service management. The stack is glued together by scripting (PowerShell or Bash) to automate provisioning and patch roll‑outs, so you’ll be expected to write or tweak scripts on the fly.
Interview Expectations
- “Walk me through how you would troubleshoot a VM that won’t power on after a host ESXi upgrade.” – They want to see your systematic approach: checking host health, VM logs, datastore connectivity, and rollback procedures.
- “Explain the differences between NetApp SnapMirror and Pure Storage Snapshots, and when you’d choose one over the other.” – This tests depth of storage knowledge and your ability to match technology to business RPO/RTO requirements.
Application Advice
Tailor your resume to mirror the JD: lead with “VMware vSphere administration”, “NetApp/Pure Storage support”, “Linux & Windows Server patching”, and “multi‑data‑center operations”. Sprinkle in verbs like “provisioned”, “troubleshot”, and “automated” alongside metrics (e.g., “reduced VM provisioning time by 30%”). Highlight any remote support experience and be explicit about working across EST time zones, as that’s a hidden requirement for this role.
