Senior IT Business Analyst - Documentation Recovery

State of South Carolina

Job Description & Details

This is a hands-on documentation recovery and discovery role for the State of South Carolina, operating completely onsite in Spartanburg. You'll be dropping into an environment where critical institutional knowledge is likely trapped in people's heads rather than written down, and your job is to extract it, organize it, and map it out to support cybersecurity, disaster recovery, and operational continuity.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

Expect to spend a lot of your time leading discovery sessions and workshops with reluctant or busy IT subject matter experts. You'll dig through existing artifacts, map out current-state workflows, identify single points of failure in documentation, and turn raw tribal knowledge into structured source material that a Technical Writer can easily operationalize. You'll live in Microsoft Visio and Microsoft 365, building out robust process flows, workflow diagrams, and tracking everything in a documentation backlog that you manage.

The Core Tech Stack

You need absolute mastery over Microsoft Visio for complex process mapping and architectural diagramming, alongside deep proficiency in the broader Microsoft 365 ecosystem including SharePoint, Teams, and Excel for artifact management and backlog tracking. Beyond the tools, your real currency here is your experience dealing with technical SMEs across infrastructure, applications, and cybersecurity, translating their messy, undocumented systems into clean, standardized workflows using frameworks like ITIL or NIST.

Interview Expectations

They are going to test how you handle a room full of defensive or distracted technical SMEs who don't want to take time out of their day to be interviewed. Be prepared to explain a specific scenario where you successfully extracted complex, undocumented technical processes from uncooperative stakeholders and translated them into clear functional requirements. They'll also want to see how you audit an existing mess of files and build a prioritized documentation backlog from scratch, so walk them through your exact prioritization methodology for gap analysis.

Application Advice

Your resume needs to heavily emphasize your enterprise-level business analysis background, particularly in IT infrastructure, disaster recovery, or cybersecurity environments. Make sure keywords like 'requirements elicitation,' 'stakeholder interviews,' 'process mapping,' and 'Microsoft Visio' jump off the page immediately so you easily clear their automated screening. Explicitly highlight any past experience with knowledge management or documentation recovery initiatives rather than just generic software delivery.
