Lead COBOL Developer & Technical Lead

Not Disclosed

Job Description & Details

This is a heavy-duty legacy modernization and support role for someone who knows their way around enterprise COBOL systems in a Windows environment. If you enjoy untangling complex mission-critical codebases, leading teams, and acting as the bridge between technical execution and business requirements, this is a solid gig.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

You will spend your days leading a technical software development team while diving deep into complex COBOL applications. Your time will be split between hands-on coding, debugging, database interactions with Oracle SQL, and providing Level 3 production support when things break. You will also act as the primary liaison with business units, translating their requests into actual technical specifications and making sure your team delivers.

The Core Tech Stack

You absolutely must have a strong command of Visual and/or Micro Focus COBOL (Version 9 is a specific plus) running in a Windows client-server architecture. On top of that, deep Oracle SQL knowledge is critical because you'll be interfacing heavily with backend databases. Familiarity with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET and C# is a nice bonus that will help you bridge legacy systems with newer tooling.

Interview Expectations

Expect the hiring team to grill you on your incident management and L3 support strategies, likely asking how you handle high-severity production failures in a mission-critical Windows environment. They want to hear about your systematic approach to debugging complex database queries and your experience communicating technical blockers directly to non-technical business stakeholders without drowning them in jargon.

Application Advice

Make sure your resume screams COBOL and Windows client-server development right at the top. Don't hide your leadership experience; explicitly highlight the years you spent managing technical teams and driving deployments. Weave in keywords like Visual COBOL, Oracle SQL, L3 production support, and technical specification gathering to ensure your resume sails past the automated filters and lands on the hiring manager's desk.
